Due to popular demand Grand Kyiv Ballet returns to Boston for an unforgettable performance of the holiday classic The Nutcracker.
In this enchanting version of The Nutcracker, a young girl befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve. Together, they embark on a fantastical journey to a magical kingdom filled with dancing sugar plum fairies, toy soldiers, and other whimsical characters. Through their adventures, she learns that love, imagination, and kindness can overcome adversity and create wonder in our lives. Considered to be the most popular ballet in the world, “The Nutcracker” was adapted into a ballet in 1892, by Pyotr Tchaikovsky with a libretto by Marius Petipa, and was based on the story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
The performance is interpreted by Victor Tomashekand Anastasia Hurska. Tomashek graduated from the State Choreographic School in Kyiv in 2008. He worked at the National Opera and Ballet Theater in Kyiv and later worked at Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. Hurska is a soloist dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine. She is also the winner of the III Prize of the International Competition of Classical and Contemporary Choreography “Mysl-potok” (Kyiv, 2014), the II Prize of the Grand Prix Kyiv International Ballet Festival (Kyiv, 2018), the I Prize of the XI International Ballet Competition in Seoul, South Korea, 2018) and a gold medalist of the 8th Beijing International Ballet Invitational for Dance Schools 2021 (China).
The Grand Kyiv Ballet, consisting of 35 exceptionally talented dancers from Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odessa, has been on a global tour, using their art to express deep emotions and concerns arising from recent events in Ukraine. Despite the challenges, the artists continue to captivate audiences worldwide, having performed at prestigious venues such as the Opera National de Paris, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, and the National Opera in Oslo. Their performances attract royal families, politicians, and celebrities, serving as a powerful testament to the universal language of art. While artists from other nations have joined their troupe, the essence of the Grand Kyiv Ballet remains rooted in the spirit and resilience of Ukrainian artists.
