New Exhibition + Artist Talk: Ruth Mordecai at Paul Dietrich Gallery

CambridgeSeven welcomes artist Ruth Mordecai to the Paul Dietrich Gallery with an exhibition opening + artist reception

 

WHO:
Ruth Mordecai, celebrated artist known for her transition from sculpture to painting, with works in major collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Israel Museum, and the Cape Ann Museum. Mordecai has been represented by Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester, MA, since 2014.

 

WHAT:

40 Years of Paint and Collage is a retrospective exhibition showcasing the evolution of Ruth Mordecai’s creative practice. Beginning with her early sculptural influences and culminating in powerful, two-dimensional works of paint and collage, this exhibit highlights a body of work rooted in gesture, symbolism, and spiritual storytelling. The opening event will include a reception and an in-person artist talk.

 

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Selections from the Container Series — Richly layered works that reference recurring themes and symbols spanning 30 years

  • New works from The Missing Letter — Inspired by Jewish mysticism and the idea of a mythical, transformative character

  • Artist Talk — Hear directly from Mordecai about her artistic journey

More About Ruth Mordecai:
Ruth Mordecai is a sculptor turned painter. For 25 years her studio was at 249 A Street in Boston's Fort Point District. It now overlooks Smith Cove on Rocky Neck in Gloucester, MA. She attended Bennington College and has a BFA and MFA from the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts (BUSFAA) and has taught at the BUSFAA, the deCordova Museum School, and the Harvard University Department of Ceramics. Her work has been shown primarily in DC, NYC, and MA. She has been represented by Matthew Swift Gallery, Gloucester, MA, since 2014. Prior to that she was represented by Soprafina Gallery in SOWA, Boston, MA. Her artwork is in major public and private collections including Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Israel Museum, Cape Ann Museum, Rose Art Museum, and Wiggin Prints and Drawings Collection of the Boston Public Library (owns 35 works 1975-2013). Work is included in Fixing the World, Jewish American Painters of the Twentieth Century, Brandeis University Press and in Tradition and Transformation, Three Millennia of Jewish Art and Architecture, Canal Street Studios, both by Dr. Ori Soltes of Georgetown University.
