"Music is a universal language that connects, heals, and inspires. It serves as a key that awakens awareness and stirs the soul."
NATALIA LAFOURCADE is a Mexican composer, artist, singer, and music producer, recognized as one of the most influential voices in Latin popular culture of this century.
She was born in Mexico City and raised in Coatepec, in the state of Veracruz. Daughter of a Chilean father, a pianist, organ builder, and promoter of Baroque music; and a Mexican mother, an educator and creator of the Macarsi method for musical training. When Natalia was six years old, she was kicked in the head by a horse, resulting in a nearly permanent injury. Her mother developed and implemented a music-based method that aided her daughter's recovery. This experience sparked a deep fascination with music in Natalia from a very young age.
Her self-titled debut album was released in the summer of 2002, when she was just 18 years old. In this album and her second one, Casa, Natalia moved gracefully between bossa nova, the warmth of classic bolero, and the vibrancy of alternative rock. The freshness and raw emotion in her lyrics conveyed a worldview brimming with hope. In 2007, she composed a symphonic suite inspired by love and the four seasons of nature, which she recorded in Veracruz with a youth orchestra. By that time, Natalia was already bringing to life dreams that once seemed unattainable.
In 2012, she released “Mujer divina”, a heartfelt tribute to the work of Agustín Lara, which sparked in her the desire to honor Latin American songwriting by drawing inspiration from the masterpieces of composers like Violeta Parra, María Grever, and Simón Díaz. Later, her collaboration with the acoustic guitar duo Los Macorinos led to the creation of two LPs, Musas: a tribute to Latin American folklore, blending her own songs with folklore classics such as “Tú me acostumbraste,” “Soy lo prohibido,” and “Duerme negrito,” all interpreted with her unique touch.
In 2015, she released Hasta la raíz, one of her most acclaimed albums, which helped her establish herself as one of the leading artists of her generation. The title track became an instant global anthem, resonating across different generations.
In 2020 and 2021, she renewed her connection to her roots with the two volumes of Un canto por México, in which she revisits songs like “Cien años” and “La llorona” alongside like-minded artists such as Mon Laferte, Pepe Aguilar, Rubén Blades, and Silvana Estrada, among others.
Collaborating with artists from different genres has been an adventure that has allowed her to explore sounds far from her comfort zone, while also reaffirming her own vision. "Nunca es suficiente", the nostalgic cumbia of broken hearts she recorded in 2018 with Los Ángeles Azules, became the most-watched Mexican video of all time, with over two billion views. She has also collaborated as an arranger, producer, composer, and performer with artists such as Juan Gabriel, Omara Portuondo, Jorge Drexler, Leonel García, Kevin Johansen, Gilberto Gil, Miguel, Jon Batiste, and Devendra Banhart, among others.
For Natalia, music is the heart of existence, but not her only source of inspiration. Un canto por México was born from a concert she organized at the end of 2019 to help rebuild the Son Jarocho Documentation Center in Jáltipan de Morelos, in México, which had been damaged by two earthquakes. The Fundación Natalia Lafourcade was established to support music education through the traditions and folklore of Mexico and all of Latin America.
De todas las flores, her most recent studio album, was recorded live on analog tape during sessions at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, Texas, and Acuyo Studio in Veracruz in October 2021. The musicians were immersed in isolation, connecting through pure intuition. The album blends experimental jazz, avant-garde ballads, and sunny retro tropical pop, creating a space where tragedy and warmth, restlessness and acceptance, coexist. As part of this new musical journey, she also released a self-titled book and "De Todas las Flores, El podcast", where she engages in thoughtful conversations with special guests about each track on the album.
The album was released at Carnegie Hall in New York, with David Byrne, Jorge Drexler, and Omara Portuondo as honorary guests. During the concerts, Natalia took the stage wearing a black skirt, which she removed halfway through the performance. It was an extensive tour that spanned over 10 countries and sold out iconic venues with her innovative stage proposal. De todas las flores won a GRAMMY for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album and the Latin GRAMMY for Record of the Year. In December 2024, she released Live at Carnegie Hall, her latest album, which captures her live performance at the legendary New York venue. The album was produced by acclaimed producer Cheche Alara and mixed by GRAMMY-winning engineer Michael Brauer.
During 2024, Natalia Lafourcade collaborated with the renowned orchestral director Gustavo Dudamel and the prestigious Los Angeles Philharmonic to offer a series of extraordinary performances. With the orchestra by her side, she captivated audiences with three remarkable shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and at Carnegie Hall in New York, expertly blending popular music with symphonic sound.
To conclude the year, Natalia was named the first Ambassador of Music for Peace at the XIX World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Monterrey, Mexico. Her music was recognized for its ability to break down barriers, unite people, and spread messages of hope, peace, respect, and solidarity.
Throughout her career, Natalia Lafourcade has become the Latin female artist with the most Latin GRAMMYs in the history of the Latin Recording Academy. She has earned 18 Latin GRAMMYs and 4 GRAMMYs, the Rolling Stone Legend Award, a Billboard Award, and 3 MTV Awards, in addition to being recognized as a composer by SACM and ASCAP on several occasions.
She has been part of the Person of the Year ceremonies by the Latin Recording Academy, honoring artists such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Miguel Bosé, and Alejandro Sanz. In 2019, she joined Aída Cuevas and Ángela Aguilar to perform at the Grammy Awards. She also participated in the 2018 Academy Awards ceremony alongside Gael García Bernal and R&B artist Miguel, where they performed the song “Recuérdame (Remember Me)” from Pixar’s Coco, which won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year.
Natalia Lafourcade has conducted multiple tours across Mexico, North America, Latin America, Europe, and Japan. She has also performed at both national and international festivals, taking the stage at iconic venues such as the Lincoln Center in New York, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, KoKo in London, and El Bataclán and L'Olympia in Paris.
With nearly 25 years of experience, Natalia Lafourcade has established herself as a creator of innovative connections between rhythms, genres, generations, and identities. She is now exploring a new path performing her songs with just guitar and voice, as she prepares to release a studio album in this intimate format.
"I am a firm believer in music as a living entity. It is like an energy that floats in the air and finds many ways to materialize. When this happens, the feeling is very beautiful. My wish is to keep growing while sharing the gift that has been given to me in this life."
