The critically-acclaimed Chameleon Arts Ensemble continues its fall chamber music season with “earthly echoes, celestial song” featuring Olivier Messiaen’s epic masterpiece, Quartet for the End of Time. The work’s origin is nothing short of miraculous. It was composed while Messiaen was a prisoner of war for the instruments on hand among the camp’s inmates – violin, cello, clarinet, and piano – and the premiere took place in an unheated barrack on January 15, 1941, before an audience of fellow prisoners and German officers. Overflowing with genius and invention, the Quartet stands as one of history’s greatest musical achievements, transporting us to a place between earthly suffering and the ecstasy of heaven, between measured time and boundless eternity, between sound and silence. It remains as powerful today as it was in 1941. Rounding out the program are Debussy’s exquisite Afternoon of a Faun for flute and piano; David Ludwig’s Pleiades for oboe and piano; and Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76, No. 4 “Sunrise.”

We are excited to feature Cuban pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa as our next Front Row Boston in-house music series artist for the month of December. He is a conservatory-trained pianist and the first Cuba-based musician to release an album internationally since the lifting of many of the restrictions associated with the long-standing trade embargo. Studying classical music until age 18, López-Nussa graduated with a degree in classical piano from the Instituto Superior de Artes. Since then, he has moved with ease between the classical, popular and jazz music worlds. His experiences thus far at just 34 years old include recording Heitor Villa-Lobos´ “Fourth Piano Concerto” with Cuba’s National Symphony Orchestra in 2003, and winning the First Prize and Audience Prize of the Jazz Solo Piano Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 2005. He has been part of projects as diverse as Ninety Miles – a 2011 recording with David Sánchez, Christian Scott and Stefon Harris – and Esencial, an album of compositions also from 2011 by revered Cuban classical guitarist, composer and conductor Leo Brouwer. López-Nussa has also been part of the Cuba volume of Rhythms del Mundo, which paired him with veterans from Buena Vista Social Club, and he spent three years in the touring band of singer Omara Portuondo. López-Nussa has distilled all those experiences into a rich, personal style as a player and composer. Come and hear directly from this talented musician live in WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio for an unforgettable evening.
