Written and directed by the incomparable John Hughes, the celebrated comedy PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES makes an on-time arrival for its 30th anniversary on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack with a Digital HD copy and on DVD October 10, 2017 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.   Starring comedy greats Steve Martin and John Candy, the uproarious classic follows a businessman (Martin) who is struggling to get home for Thanksgiving, but burdened by one travel mishap after another, as well as the company of an annoying traveling salesman (Candy).  Filled with outrageously funny situations and a generous helping of warmth, the film also features appearances by Michael McKean, Edie McClurg and Kevin Bacon.

The PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES Blu-ray features an in-depth retrospective on John Hughes’ career that includes interviews with those who worked with him and explores his indelible impact as a writer and filmmaker.  Additional features include “Getting There is Half the Fun: The Story of Planes, Trains And Automobiles,” “John Hughes For Adults,” a tribute to John Candy and a deleted scene.

First Run Features was founded to make available independent films, mostly social/political issue documentaries, to the public. The kind of tough, insightful, sometimes outrageous titles we've distributed in theaters, schools and on television and home video over the last 40 years comprises the largest collection of films dealing with civil rights and the plight of the underdog in America.

The recent actions of neo-nazis, KKK, white supremacists, racists and anti-Semites in Charlottesville reinforces our commitment to expose the evil and danger these people represent. One of the first films we distributed and still do is Blood in the Face produced by Village Voice contributor James Ridgeway, Academy Award nominee Anne Bohlen and The Atomic Cafe producer Kevin Rafferty, and featuring interviews with Michael Moore. The film includes rare archival footage, interviews, and promotional materials that reveal the inner workings of the Ku Klux Klan, the American Nazi Party, the Aryan Nation, The Order, and other radical right groups who speak of imminent race wars, Armageddon, the Holocaust hoax, interracial breeding, the Christian Identity faith, the hordes of foreign troops poised to attack America, and ZOG (The Zion Occupation Government).

Almost 40 years later we began distributing Welcome to Leith, which chronicles the attempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notorious white supremacist Craig Cobb. As his behavior becomes more threatening, tensions soar, and the residents desperately look for ways to expel their unwanted neighbor. With incredible access to both longtime residents of Leith and white supremacists, the film examines a small community in the plains struggling for sovereignty against an extremist vision.

Today First Run has about 500 films in our collection, with a number that also deal with the threat of the far right. I am particularly eager for as many people as possible to see Blood in the Face and Welcome to Leith and would like to offer them on DVD at a discounted price of $5 through 8/31. Use coupon code FIGHTHATE at www.firstrunfeatures.com. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Juice

Cinematically speaking, 1992 was an impressive year at the movies, with films ranging from Aladdin to Reservoir Dogs to Basic Instinct making it into theaters. Of course, not all the movie class of 1992 are worth celebrating – does anyone remember (or want to admit) seeing Encino Man or Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot? While it may not be as immediately memorable as some of the other movies in its time, Juice, the directorial debut of cinematographer Ernest R. Dickerson (Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X) is well worth rediscovering. It’s the story of four young men – passionately played by Omar Eps, Tupac Shakur, Jermaine 'Huggy' Hopkins and Khalil Kain – desperately trying to get out of Harlem and make a better life for themselves. Of the four, only Q (Epps) has a dream that doesn’t involve committing a crime to get some fats money and street cred (the ‘juice’ of the title), but peer pressure makes him take part in a robbery that quickly turns deadly. Although the story feels a bit dated, the energy of the four performers, combined with Dickerson’s visual flair make Juice compelling viewing. 3 ½ stars

Bambi

Yes, there is that emotionally crushing scene that has probably traumatized more young viewers than any other film this side of Old Yeller, but Bambi is also one of the most gorgeous animated movies ever captured on celluloid. And it’s not the cute little forest creatures that are so stunning to watch; it’s the intricately painted natural backdrops that make you realize that Disney was right in his quest to make the world see animation as art. Bambi also contains a musical/visual sequence to a song called Little April Shower that is the same kind of beautiful blend of music and imagery that Disney perfected in Fantasia two years before. Unfortunately, the film starts to fall apart following the ‘big event’ that everybody remembers as the young Bambi reaches adolescents and becomes a somewhat bratty teenage deer. Yes, the forest fire sequence is still thrilling, and you can’t help but root for the ‘young prince’ to save the day, but by that point the true emotional impact of the movie has come and gone. 3 stars

A United Kingdom

It’s not a story that modern American moviegoers may be familiar with: Back in the 1940s, King Seretse Khama of Botswana risked his crown, his country and his life to marry a British white woman named Ruth Williams. And while anyone watching director Amma Asante’s movie will furnish them with the facts of the case, it’s doubtful they will walk away swept up in the romance of the story because of a total lack of screen chemistry between the two leads, David Oyelowo as the King and Rosamund Pike as his wife. They appear on screen in plenty of potentially romantic or thrilling scenes, many of which involve the pair standing up against a group or individual who doesn’t think their union is acceptable on any level, but neither Oyelowo or Pike steps up and believably delivers the fire or passion the scene calls for. They just seem to be going through the motions as if unsure who the movie is about, the king or his wife when it should be about both. 1 ½ stars
